March 06, 2009

President Art Awerkamp has devised a great way to get his brother, Ted, to attend a meeting – ask him to speak. So, this week, we’ll welcome Ted, and Dan Cook, to the podium to give us an update on the banking business. Much to talk about in this area from the bail-outs to the mortgage rates and a lot in between. Plus, we’ll announce our final Youth of the Month recipient. Please join us.

FRIDAY LAST

An interesting program on steamboats brought to us by Dave Dulaney. Mr. Dulaney gave us a Power Point presentation of photos taken by Mr. Henry Klene from 1902-1916. Mr. Klene was commissioned in the early 1900’s to conduct this project. (He died in 1958 at the age of 77 so that would explain why he wasn’t with us last week as I had previously noted. What can I say?) It must have been an amazing time to see these beautiful boats frequently sailing the Mississippi River. One interesting fact: there were eight steamboats named after Quincy from 1836 to 1896. That is more named than any other city on the upper Mississippi. Cool stuff. Paul Niemann with the introduction.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Elvin’s dad was in the Circus. I think that explains a lot.” Your humble editor’s remark upon hearing Elvin Townsend tell our speaker about his father and the steamboats he traveled on years ago.

THIS & THAT

Mayor John Spring with the prayer (keeping a recuperating Gary Peters in mind) and Bill Stalder leading the pledge… Alicia Cunningham the guest of Kirk Frageman. Alicia is the owner of Sterling Awards (the late Pete Patterson’s old place) and great gal. She recently donated all the awards for our Special Olympics basketball tournament. Thanks, Alicia… Andy Blaesing the guest of Tim Muehring. Andy’s application has been approved by the board (Tim is sponsoring) and we’ll have a first reading on him this week… Speaking of first readings, James Totch, sponsored by Jim Benz, had his last week… President Art telling us about nice thank you notes from our two Law Day award winners, Cathy Dyer and Trooper Todd Adkisson. President Art passing on his thanks to Sheriff Brent Fischer and Chief Rob Copley for the work on the successful Law Day… The Slate of Officers for 2009/2010 has been completed. I’ll print it in next week’s Exchangite… Hard to believe but Ric Hinkamper has FINNALLY received his certificate from National. President Art presented it to him last week. Congratulations, Ric… Perhaps a Freedom Shrine to be placed in Curtis Creek (AKA – Max’s house)? Details are being checked on. We’ll see… Steve Peters twisting tails or as he said, “doing everything” (induction and tail twister)… Perry Terwelp won the 50/50 but picked the wrong card (ace of clubs). Pot grows – should be over $500 this week… That's all for now, 'til next time, may God’s love, grace, and peace be with you and the ones you love.

Our newest Man of Action, Hal Broadwater (on right), and his sponsor, Kevin O’Donnell.
