SURF ‘n TURF THURSDAY (1/29)
The doors at Cedar Crest Country Club will open at 5:00 p.m. Appetizers at 5:30 and the great meal at 6:30 p.m. Hats off to Surf ‘n Turf Chairman Jared Haugh and his crew for what will undoubtedly be a great evening. Have a good time, men!

THIS FRIDAY:
We are still working on the program for this Friday. We will either have a Super Bowl preview of some sort, local coaches, or something entirely different. You’ll just have to show up to be sure!

FRIDAY LAST:
An interesting program on the psyche of our most beloved president, Abraham Lincoln, by QHS history and government teacher Rob Mellon. Rob spoke in detail about President’s Lincoln’s deep depression and total despondence in 1841 from January 1st to the 20th. As Rob told us, Lincoln’s depression helped fuel his ambition and subsequent greatness. Interesting stuff. Our thanks to Rob (for condensing his talk to fit our timeframe) and to Vic Welper for the introduction.

YOUTH OF THE MONTH:
Congratulations to QHS senior Kristen Spurrier for being named our Youth of the Month. Kristen’s long list of honors and accomplishments is impressive to say the least. Marching band, concert band, pep band, soccer, National Honor Society, 4H, and math team are small sampling. Kristen plans on continuing her education this fall at the University of Iowa with a major in mechanical engineering and a minor in mathematics. David and Darlene Spurrier are the proud parents. Introductions by Mike Llewellyn and QHS counselor Mindy Jackson.

PROGRAM PLANNING ASSISTANCE:
Program Director Gary Peters is having hip surgery soon and will be out of commission for several weeks. Gary does a great job of ensuring that we have interesting, relevant, and current topics each week but during his recovery, we all need to lend a helping hand. He has the first three weeks in February planned but we are looking for programs for 2/27 and then the first few Fridays in March. If you have a program (ideas are great but we need your help in contacts as well), please see President Art Awerkamp or myself – let’s not trouble Gary during his recovery. Thank you.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
“I’ve heard that.” Gary Peters quick quip as Vic Welper introduced our speaker, Rob Mellon, and told us his son was usually with Rob. (Heck of a lot funnier in person that it appears in print!)

INTERNET SITE:
The Exchange Club of Quincy is currently seeking (one year) bids to maintain and build upon our club website (www.quincyexchangeclub.org). Please see President Art to submit a bid or seek more information about the process.

THIS & THAT:
Rich Zeidler with the prayer and Bruce Broemmel leading the pledge… Good to see a few men we hadn’t seen in a while – Gil Feld, Tim Muehring, and Brian Musholt… Unfortunately we have received resignations from Roger Schaeffer and Abe Gray. We wish both the best and thank them for their years of service… President Art telling us about a thank you from Madonna House for the food drive (led by Fred Lauder) we did late last year… If you are planning on bringing more than one guests to the Rick Hummel meeting next week, please let House Chairman Mel Dillman know in advance (so we can have enough food and seating)… President Art noting that we are looking for new Freedom Shrine locations. If you know of a spot that could use one, please let him or any board member know… Randy Frese twisting tails and telling stories about our illustrious governor. What a freak show it has been in Springfield/Chicago since December 9th (actually way before that)… Congratulation to Bill Stalder and his wife, Brenda, for emceeing the Quincy Community Theater Awards banquet this past Saturday… Great picture of our President’s wife, Cindy, and Chuck Venvertloh’s wife, Tracy, in the Sunday Whig. Must have been a fun Saturday evening… Jimmy Louthen won the 50/50 but picked the wrong card (jack of clubs). Pot nearing the $400 mark… That's all for now, 'til next time, may God’s love, grace, and peace be with you and the ones you love.
