The Exchange Club of Quincy, Illinois

Friday, September 26, 2008:

THIS FRIDAY:
We’ll welcome Dr. / Colonel Thomas Klincar, new president of John Wood Community College.  Dr. Klincar has only been in Quincy for a few months but he is already leaving his mark.  On Friday, he’ll probably make a few remarks about JWCC but as I understand it, the majority of his comments will be centered around military service.  (By the way, he will be the keynote speaker at the Veterans Home’s Veterans Day Program on 11/11/08.)

FRIDAY LAST:
Good to have Quincy Police Chief and one of our own, Rob Copley, with us.  Rob touched on a number of serious issues including the city’s gang problem (25-50 local gang members and approximately 12 non-local gang members), drugs, and traffic patrol.  The chief told us the three are closely related.  More traffic stops often lead to more drug arrests and gang activity usually isn’t far from the drug arrests.  Thanks for the visit Chief Copley - don’t be a stranger.  Mayor John Spring with the introduction.

FALL BRAWL:
The Fall Brawl has been confirmed by Chairman Eric Schultz.  October 18th at Cedar Crest Country Club.  $20 a couple and yes, that includes karaoke.  For you new members and you “old” members who never participate in the socials, add this event to your schedule and plan on being there.  A great night out for you and the special one in your life.  Good friends, good food and drink, and good entertainment guaranteed.

THIS & THAT:
Right off the bat, my thanks to Paul Niemann for taking notes last week.  Paul even offered two quotes to pick from for Quote of the Week.  Appreciate the help…  Jim Benz with the prayer and Dave Poland leading us in the pledge…  I wasn’t the only one missing as 1st Vice President Kevin Curran filled in for the absent President Art Awerkamp…  Charlie Ledbetter’s son, Cory, a guest of his father.  Cory is a criminal justice major at JWCC.  Bring him back this week Charlie so he can score some point with the JWCC president…  Please note the information above on the 2008 version of the Fall Brawl…  I understand Smoke on the River Chairman Mel Dillman said his thank yous and gave us a wrap up.  I’ll include that next week as I haven’t had a chance to speak directly with Mel yet…  Steve Peters twisting tails and winning the 50/50 card drawing.  He drew the wrong card (10 of diamonds) though…  That's all for now, 'til next time, may God’s love, grace, and peace be with you and the ones you love.

Friday, September 12, 2008:

THIS FRIDAY:
We’ll talk college gridiron as Quincy University Coach Bill Terlisner and Culver-Stockton College Coach Christian Gunther share the spotlight.  Unlike previous seasons, the two programs will not meet this year.  Quincy University opened their 11-game season last week with a 63-0 loss to the Leathernecks of Western Illinois.  Culver-Stockton opened their 11-game season last week with a 17-0 loss to Avila.  Join us on Friday to learn how Coach Terlisner and Coach Gunther plan to turn their seasons around.

FRIDAY LAST:
The second annual Smoke on the River is now in the books and it was a good one.  This year’s event was HUGE!  Our sincere thanks to Chairman Mel Dillman and his fine committee for their leadership, planning, and of course, execution of the highly successful event.  The two day event started off on Friday afternoon with our meeting at Kesler Park/The Dock.  Tim Muehring’s Lickins provided a great lunch for members and then Chairman Mel gave us an overview of what was to come.  Mel then introduced Dennis and Linda Polson, head judges sent to our event by the Kansas City Barbecue Society.  Dennis outlined the scoring based on appearance, taste, and tenderness/texture.  More on the weekend this Friday and in next week’s Exchangite.

NEWEST MAN OF ACTION:
Welcome to Curt Moore – our newest Man of Action.  Curt is a retired state employee and now works for Dillman and Associates.  He and his wife, Charlotte, have been married 36 years.  They recently moved back to Quincy after 25 years in Springfield.  Welcome, Curt.  Steve Peters and Mel Dillman (Curt’s sponsor) doing the induction.

Jim Benz with the prayer and the Big Dog, Jeff Dorsey, leading the pledge…  Dan Cook the guest of Bob Hays and Linda Dillman the guest of Smoke on the River Chairman/husband, Mel…  Congratulations to Ric Hinkamper on officiating the Ohio State vs. Ohio game last Saturday.  A better game than Ric and most Buckeye fans thought it would be.  Ohio State pulled it out and now all is well in the ESPN universe…  Speaking of Ric, he was one of the featured speakers at Tuesdays, Character Champions seminar at JWCC.  What a cool program this is.  Some kids attend and absorb all they can and others, well, they’re there physically.  Our thanks to John Johannes, Jim Benz, Kirk Frageman, Daron Duke, Vic Welper, and Kevin Curran for their great work with the program…  It was good to see our two newest Men of Action, Lonny Lemon and Curt Moore, pulling their weight and then some during Smoke on the River.  Thank you, guys…  Dave Rees won the 50/50 and then proceeded to draw the Ace of Spades.  Good for you, Dave.  He is now $217 richer.  We’ll start it over this week...  That's all for now, 'til next time, take care!

Friday, September 5, 2008:

THIS FRIDAY:

ROAD TRIP THIS FRIDAY:
Smoke on the River takes center stage this weekend and it all begins Friday at our regular meeting.  (Actually it starts Thursday evening with set up but you already know that.).  We’ll meet in Kesler Park (immediately south of The Dock) for lunch and we’ll hear from Chairman Mel Dillman and the Head Judge from the Kansas City Barbecue Society.  Tim Muehring’s catering business, Lickens’, I believe is the correct name, will provide a great meal for us.

With lunch covered, we still need help Friday evening with the steak dinner and all day Saturday.  If you are not signed up for a task already, please give Mel a call ASAP.  This is going to be a fun event and we want you to be a part of it.  I believe we are up to 24 competitors at this time.

CHARACTER CHAMPIONS:
The Character of Champions program will take place on Tuesday, September 9th at John Wood Community College.  Help is needed – this Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at Kirk Frageman’s house (to stuff packets) and then on Tuesday morning (to register the students as they come in).  Please see Chairman John Johannes or Kirk Frageman if you can help.

FRIDAY LAST:
Good to have Mr. Jim Steinkamp with us.  Jim spoke about geology and the importance of the top soil (loess) in our area – carried down by glaciers during the Ice Age.  He also spoke about the three R’s – reduce, reuse, recycle.  Unfortunately, we weren’t able to hear the entire scope of Jim’s presentation due to a busy day.  Dick Wentura doing the introduction.

Before Jim, we heard an update from Sheriff Brent Fischer on the K-9 program within the Adams County Sheriff’s Department.  Unless I misunderstood, the count will be up to three dogs soon, including a bomb sniffing K-9.  Sheriff Fischer accepted three checks on the afternoon - $3,000 from our club, presented by President Art Awerkamp; one from Quincy Regional Crimestoppers, presented by Jeff Dorsey; and finally, $2,000 from Adams Electric Cooperative (Penny Power Program), presented by Bill Stalder.

We’ll learn a little something about are region’s geology from Mr. Jim Steinkamp.  A life-long interest for Jim, he will tell us what type of soil we have in the area, how it came about, and why it is important that we know and understand this.  Bring a friend from the agricultural field and broaden your horizons.  See you Friday!

FRIDAY LAST:
An outstanding program
by Mr. Phil Germann related to but not necessarily about the famous Lincoln Douglas debate.  Instead of giving us details about the debate itself, Phil gave us a glimpse of Quincy in 1858 and the days and hours leading up to the October 13, 1858 event.  Interesting stuff to say the least.  John Johannes, who serves on the Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, did the introduction.  Learn more about the Bicentennial event at lincolndouglasquincydebate.com.

We’ll be back in the East Room of Tony’s Old Place and our program will be presented by Debbie Hemmerle, President of the Mark Twain Corvette Club.  The Corvette Club is busy preparing for their 2nd Annual All Corvette Show to be conducted on Saturday, August 9th in Hannibal.  As Program Director Gary Peters noted at the last meeting, there will be a few Corvettes outside of the East Room for us to enjoy.  (That means to look at, not touch or take for a joy ride…)

SWIM PARTY TUESDAY EVENING:

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:

THIS & THAT:
Our condolences to Bill Barry on the loss of his brother, Virgil, on 7/27.  Condolences to the Welper family as well as Virgil Barry was the uncle of Vic Welper’s wife, Marge.  My thanks to Vic for sharing the information…  Good time to remind you - please let me know about the good (especially births of children and grandchildren) and bad so I can share the news with fellow Exchangites.  I try to keep my eyes and ears open but it is impossible to keep up with 115 men and their families…  Jared Haugh with the prayer and new member Eric Thomas with the pledge…  Widows and orphans fund must be running low as we tail twisted on the road – Jared doing the duty…  President Art presented the above mentioned Eric Thomas with his National Certificate…  Good news about the Exchange Club tent that has spent the summer at QU Stadium.  Took a little beating (the poles did anyway) on that 7/27 storm but the Gems staff made the necessary repairs and the tent was back up in time for the Friday 8/1 Gems game.  Thanks, guys…  Kent Anderson had the winning ticket but drew the wrong card.  No sympathy for Kent as this was the second consecutive week he won – the previous week he took home $321…  That's all for now, 'til next time, take care!

Friday, August 1:

ROAD TRIP THIS FRIDAY:
We’ll meet at The Pier
(401 Bonansinga Drive) to hear their flood story and see first hand what they had to deal with.  The Pier was closed for a couple of weeks during the worst of the flood but quickly re-opened.  We’ll be on the third floor of the upscale restaurant (there is an elevator).  Guaranteed to be a good one.  See you then.

FRIDAY LAST:
Good to have our friend and
Executive Director of the Oakley Lindsey Center Rob Ebbing with us.  As Rob updated us on the Gems and told us about the flood fighting efforts at the Center, he showed us some great corresponding photos.  Over ONE MILLION sandbags filled at the Center during the flood fighting efforts.  That is amazing!  Many in the club involved with that effort.  Good stuff!  Chairman of the Oakley Lindsey Center and our 1st Vice President Kevin Curran with the introduction.

MACKER WRAP UP:
Hats off to 2008 Gus Macker Chairman Steve Green on the announcement that the 2008 tournament netted the club approximately $21,000.00  This despite being down a major sponsor and nearly $8,000 in food sales (because of the awful weather).  Steve and his committee focused on court sponsors and it paid off.  Very impressive, Steve.  Thank you and great job!  Steve and 2009 Chairman Heath Richmond now turn their focus to a new contract.  More on this later.

GEMS GAME:
Nice to see a good showing by Exchangites at the 7/28 Gems game – Quincy Exchange Club/Armed Forces night.  We held our large flag in centerfield during a special tribute to our Armed Forces and veterans then most Exchangites consumed a few cold beverages (compliments of the Oakley Lindsey Center) afterwards.  By the way, our tent, which has been proudly on display all summer at QU Stadium, suffered some damage during the 7/27 thunderstorm and high winds.  An update on this later.

Chairman Mel Dillman announcing plans for a Friday night steak “throw down” and steak dinner as part of the Smoke on the River event.  The throw down is a challenge event with the winner receiving a grill from Hy-Vee.  First challenge issued by President Art Awerkamp to new member and Hy-Vee store manager Steve Labs.  Steve has accepted.  This could be a fun thing – who do you want to challenge?  The steak dinner is open to the public.  One steak for $15.00 or two for $25.00.  Band to follow the throw down/dinner at 8:00 p.m.  A great way to kick off the event.  Still looking for a few sponsors.  This is going to be a cool thing.  How can you help?  See Mel Dillman to volunteer.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
“Hey, does your computer have any other feature but slow zoom?”  1st Vice President and Oakley Lindsey Board Chairman Kevin Curran to speaker Rob Ebbing.  Rob was in the middle of showing us approximately 250 photos of the Gems and the flood fighting efforts - everyone featured the same slow zoom.  Very funny, Kevin.

THIS & THAT:
Jim Benz with the good prayer and David Grimm asking us to face the flag before starting the pledge.  Who is the dip$hit that hasn’t been facing the flag prompting David to make such a comment…
2nd and final reading on Lonny Lemon, sponsored by Mike Lavery.  The vote was 6-1.  Let’s bring him in…  Good to see a large number of members wearing their name badges…  No guests through week three of the President Art administration…  Congratulations, Kent Anderson!  Kent won the 50/50/Ace of Spades contest and took home a cool $321.00.  As I understood it, Kent purchased the last ticket sold – usually reserved for the late arriving Rich Lavery…  That's all for now, 'til next time, take care!

Good to see Gill Feld in
the house last week.  Gil reports that he will be updating the name badges over the course of the next few weeks.  If yours is wrong or you do not have one, please see him.  As Gil reminded us, WEAR YOUR NAME BADGE every week – so members and guests alike will know who you are.  Good to have you back, Gil…  Congratulations to Abe & Susan Gray on the birth of their first child, Isaac John, born July 11th.  Abe reports mother and son are doing well.  Your life as you knew it Abe, is forever changed!  Most of it for the better…  Yours truly with the prayer and Charlie Ledbetter leading the pledge…  President Art Awerkamp thanking 1st Vice President Kevin Curran for running the 7/11 meeting…  Please note a couple new dates added to the VIP DATES – Road Trip on August 1st to The Pier and the previously mentioned Veterans Day Parade on 11/8…  1st Reading on the new Quincy Superintendent of Schools, Lonny Lemon, sponsored by Mike Lavery…  Steve Peters twisting tails to an unusually sedated crowd…  Our condolences to the family and friends of former Exchangite Wendell Smith…  The board has regrettably accepted the resignation of Darin Dodd…  Membership (after subtracting Darin and adding Lonny) will be 115.  President Art expressed interest in a membership drive…  President Art thanking all members, especially the bartending talents of Jerry Ebbing, who attended and assisted with the National Convention hospitality room in St. Louis.  Ours was apparently a hit with convention attendees.  National Convention will be in Jacksonville FL next summer…  President Art also mentioning the Lincoln-Douglas Bicentennial Celebration and the offer for our club to cook at the event.  See him if you are interested in helping with this.  More details later…  Fred Lauder had the right 50/50 ticket but picked the wrong card (king of hearts).  Pot over $300 now…  That's all for now, 'til next time, take care!

FRIDAY LAST:
Super turn out, great
meal, and a good look at Game Masters.  The locally owned (Steve Brink and Don Taylor) business will celebrate its fifth anniversary in October and is now under the supervision of Exchangite Perry Terwelp.  (Perry started about three to four weeks ago.)  Game Master employees 35 people and is much more than just a hunting and fishing shop.  You name it and they have it – or will find and get it for you.  Did I mention food?  Thursdays from 11-3 you can enjoy a buffet and on Friday nights, eat prime rib done up right.  Chris Hogge is the chef and if Chris is cooking, you can bet it will be good.  Nice to hear from Perry, Jerry Taylor, Doug Alexander, and Charles Whitcomb.  We appreciated the door prizes as well.  Good stuff!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
“Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!  Dang it!”  Steve Peters reaction after EVERY door prize number called that didn’t match his.  The aaaaaghs and grousing got a little louder each time.  Dude just cracks me (and a lot of others too) up!  If I’m not mistaken, Steve will be our tail twister this week.  That’s always fun.

THIS & THAT:
Mike Lavery with
the prayer and Jerry Ebbing leading the pledge…  New Quincy Superintendent of Schools, Lonny Lemon the guest of the aforementioned Mr. Lavery.  Look for a first reading on Lonny this Friday.  Good to have Lonny back in town and ready to join us – assuming he passes the tough admission process our club is known for…  Roger Schaefer informing us of a Slim Sommerville sighting.  Roger says Slim was out walking with the assistance of a walker and his wife.  Please keep the former tail twister and popcorn man in your prayers…  Our thanks to Elvin Townsend for shining the Exchange Club bell.  Looks great!  This has become a tradition by Elvin each year as a new president takes over and we do appreciate what you do Elvin…  Bruce Broemmel twisting tails and doing a good job of collecting for the widows and orphans fund...  Many thanks to Gary Peters for stepping up (as usual) to chair publicity for Smoke on the River…  With 1st Vice President Kevin Curran running the meeting, business partner and close friend Dave Rees took care of the 50/50.  Thanks, Dave…  Rich Zeidler had the right ticket but picked the wrong card (queen of clubs).  Pot climbing over the $325.00 mark…  Look for President Art to fill us in on the goings on at the July board meeting conducted this past Monday…  We’ll probably hear a report or two about the National Convention held down in St. Louis last weekend as well.  Looking forward to it…  That's all for now, 'til next time, take care!

Friday, July 11:

ROAD TRIP THIS FRIDAY:
Join us on the east end of town – Game Masters (5200 Broadway) to be specific - for lunch and our program.  Our own Perry Terwelp is now managing the business and we’ll learn more about what Game Masters has to offer above and beyond hunting and fishing.  Our meal will be prepared by good friend Chris Hogge (who is usually responsible for at least a few of the treats we enjoy at our Christmas Party each year).  Good stuff.  See you Friday.

FRIDAY LAST – NO MEETING:
Hope you had a wonderful Independence Day.

SMOKE ON THE RIVER:
The 2nd Annual Smoke on the River BBQ Contest will take place on, Friday/Saturday, September 5th/6th in Kesler Park.  This event is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society (check them out at kcbs.us).  That is an addition from last year and means a great deal to the potential entrants.  Mel Dillman is chairing the event while Dan Veihl, Jimmie Louthen, Tim Muehring, and Vic Welper serve on the Executive Committee.  We don’t expect this to be a labor intensive event but help will be needed on the Friday to set up, the Saturday to work the event, and on the Sunday to clean up.  Mel is still seeking someone to fill the very important roll of publicity chairman.  The group meets Thursday evenings at 5:00 at the Butcher Block – all members invited to attend.  More as we go.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
In the absence of a meeting last week, I offer these two quotes found on the internet.  I think you’ll find them funny and appropriate considering our membership:

“Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.”  (Homer Simpson)

“I have lots of ideas.  Trouble is, most of them suck.”  (The late George Carlin)

THIS & THAT:
I know, your bulletin was late this week.  Get over it…  Our condolences to the Dr. Bob Moss family on the recent loss of Bob’s father…  Kevin Curran to run the 50/50 this year.  Thanks, Kevin…  It’s the middle of July already?  Where the heck did May and June go…   That's all for now, 'til next time, take care!

Friday, July 4:

NO MEETING THIS FRIDAY:
Happy Independence Day!  Enjoy time spent with family and friends and most importantly, thank a Veteran for our independence.  Please note that when we resume on the 11th, we’ll do so with a road trip to Game Masters.  More on this next week.

FRIDAY LAST:
We said goodbye to President Jeff Dorsey after an absolutely great year.  Lots of accomplishments and tons of fun.  Before he handed the gravel to President Art Awerkamp, Jeff thanked the membership in general and several key individuals and he recapped the highlights of his administration (Smoke on the River, Freedom Shrine at Brown County, National Day of Service, and the restoration of Fall Brawl, to name a few).  Speaking from experience, serving as president of this organization is an honor and a humbling experience.  Jeff certainly reflected both during his comments.  We are better because of you, Jeff Dorsey.  Thank  you for serving!

After the Great Cub Fan Max Johnson conducted the induction ceremony, President Art presented Jeff with his President’s plaque and told us he is excited about the year ahead invoking the name and memories of his late Father, Tom.  Hold on boys, should be a heck of a ride!

EXCHANGITE OF THE YEAR:
Mr. Kevin Curran is our Exchangite of the Year.  Well deserved to say the least.  Kevin is involved in nearly every activity this club participates in.  Outside of the club, Kevin is involved in nearly every good deed that benefits our wonderful little city.  Kevin is a Macker Head Buster (which in itself is worthy) but also played the key roll in the Exchange Club of Quincy restarting the Special Olympics basketball tournament at QU.  Great choice.  Jared Haugh, last year’s recipient, with the announcement and presentation.

VIP DATES:
7/2 – Gil & Susan Feld celebrate their 25th anniversary
7/3
– Chris Parker celebrates a birthday
7/4 - NO MEETING

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
“No meeting next week and I’ll not be here on the 11
th,”  President Art Awerkamp.  Hey, we are off to a great start!

THIS & THAT:
Jared Haugh with the prayer and Ted Awerkamp, yes, Ted Awerkamp, with the pledge.  I assume we’ll see Ted
more now that the younger bro is in charge.  At least we hope so…  Big news last week – Rich Lavery 20 minutes early…  Resignation letter from Dr. Bob Moss.  We’ll miss Bob and thank him for his tremendous work with the Hearing Impaired Christmas Parties…  Nice thank you note from the Tom Burke family…  Great job (as always) by Mel Dillman and Dan Veihl on the President’s Party.  Good food, drink, and an absolutely beautiful evening.  Mel moving back on the good side after chasing away district golf…  President Jeff presenting John Tripp with his award (as defined in last week’s bulletin)…  President Jeff wrapping up the District Convention happening.  I’m sure a lot of good went on but all we heard about was President Jeff having to ride in a cramped backseat.  Like we really believe it is the first time he has ever been in a cramped backseat…  Look for details regarding Smoke on the River in next week’s bulletin…  Carlos Fernandez had the winning 50/50 ticket but drew the wrong card (nine of spades).  Pot climbing near $250…  Happy Independence Day…  That's all for now, 'til next time, take care!

FRIDAY LAST:
Always a pleasure to have
Baseball Hall of Famer Rick Hummel with us and to talk a little sports.  Rick’s knowledge of major league baseball and his insight on all professional sports is amazing.  It is a blessing to have him join us each year but especially so this year.  Program Chairman Gary Peters with the introduction and some stand up comedy before doing so.  Good stuff.

COACH DAVE SWISEGOOD
Speaking of Hall of Fame guys, Central-Southeastern Head Baseball Coach Dave Swisegood and his wife joining us for lunch.  This past spring, Coach Swise (as he is known) became the all-time leader in Illinois High School baseball wins as a coach.  President Jeff Dorsey recognized Dave’s feat with a small congratulatory gift from the club.  Humble as he is, Dave didn’t wish to say anything.  More good stuff.

SO PROUDLY WE HAIL:
Congratulations to Transitions of Western Illinois for being selected as a recipient of the Club’s So Proudly We Hail Award.  Transitions Executive Director Mike Rein on hand to accept the plaque and American Flag we present to all recipients.  1st Vice President Art Awerkamp making the presentation.  (If you didn’t know, this award is presented to an individual, business, or organization who properly displays and flies the American Flag with pride.)

KREMER-CLARKSON-KRAUSE AWARD:
Congratulations to our newest lifetime member, John Tripp, for receiving the Kremer-Clarkson-Krause Award.

A little about the award:  it is named in honor of three outstanding Exchangites who exemplified the term “Communicator”…  Felix Kremer of the Madison, Wisconsin Club, Paul Clarkson of the Quincy, Illinois Club, and Charles Krause of the East Moline/Silvis, Illinois Club.  It is presented to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding service as a communicator over an extended period of service to Exchange.  This award can recognize the written and spoken word as well as any communication media such as radio, television, art, etc. The honoree is selected from the nominees by a committee appointed by the District President and chaired by the editor of the district bulletin.  The award is not necessarily presented each year.

As stated when we honored John with the lifetime membership – anyone more deserving?  I think not.  Congratulations, John, and thank you for everything you have done and continue to do to make the Exchange Club the best it can be.  We are most certainly better because of you!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
“It was seeing how much my family and friends
enjoyed the event.”  Guest speaker Rick Hummel’s response when asked what was his favorite part of being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame last summer.  Speaks volumes of Rick, wouldn’t you say?

THIS & THAT:
Jim Benz with the prayer and Vic Welper
leading the pledge…  Several guests but I was too busy feeding my face to get all their names…  Good to have Coach Swisegood with us – that’s one I remember.  I never played for Coach Swise but I did contribute to a couple wins for him back in the mid-80’s.  Guy remembers almost every game (including those) like it was yesterday…  Our thanks to the good folks at Refreshment Services Pepsi for the four St. Louis Cardinal tickets that we gave away last Friday.  Your generosity is appreciated.  Art Awerkamp making the call for the goodies…  Steve Labs picking up a few brews for us to give away as well…  Sonny Christner had the winning 50/50 ticket but drew the wrong card (four of hearts).  Pot will absolutely be over $200 this week.  Promise…  That's all for now, 'til next time, take care!

THIS FRIDAY:
Our good friend Rick Hummel will join us.  As most of you know, Rick is a Quincy native, sportswriter for the St. Louis Post Dispatch, and member of the Baseball Hall of Fame inducted since his last visit.  Rick originally planned on joining us in February but had to cancel after a tragedy in the St. Louis area.  It will be good to have him with us and talk a little baseball.  That is, as long as the Mighty Mississippi allows his travel from St. Louis!  Join us Friday and bring a baseball fan to what is always one of the best programs of the year.

FRIDAY LAST:
Judge Mark Schuering’s daughter, Maggie Strong, took to the podium first to tell us about the Mid Summer Arts Faire to be conduced June 27-29th in beautiful Washington Park.  As Maggie noted, “Come to the Faire and buy art”.  53 artist will be showcasing their works.  Good stuff so go and enjoy.  (Judge Schuering was rightfully beaming as Maggie tamed the club.)

After Maggie, Mike Klingner took over and filled us in on hydro power and what it could mean for our community.  The City of Quincy owns rights to produce hydro power at Lock & Dams #20 (Canton), #21 (Quincy), and #22 (Saverton).  Mike told us they are researching and leaning toward “Low Head” technology.  Interesting stuff to say the least.  Perhaps an update on this subject down the line.  Cullan Duke with the introduction of his boss.

UGLY TIE CONTEST:
Something different and a fun twist last Friday.  Elvin Townsend won the ugly tie contest hands-down and picked up a $50 gift certificate to Scheuckings.  Man, he not only had one ugly tie but two!  Gary Peters won second and Dr. Joe Bocke picked up a third place finish.  Both walked away with $25 gift certificates to Scheuckings.  Good stuff.  Thanks for the idea, Gary!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
“We need to clean up the decorum.”  President Jeff Dorsey brought up the subject first breeched at the June Board Meeting.  As sometimes needed in this group, President Jeff reminded us that when by ourselves, most things go, but when we have guests – especially ladies and young ones, we need to keep it clean.  Enough said.

THIS & THAT:

you would win if it were?

THIS FRIDAY:
First we'll welcome the lovely and talented daughter of Judge Mark
Schuering, Maggie Schuering, to the podium.  Maggie will give a preview
of the upcoming Mid Summer's Arts Faire.  Then, we'll hear from Mike
Klingler, Klinger and Associates, on hydro power.  Our fair city is
betting on hydro power being a great deal for us.  Learn more about
hydro power on Friday.

FRIDAY LAST:
Good to have our newest Man of Action, Eric Thomas, running with the
program.  Eric is the owner/operator of ETC Computerland and he told us
about his growing business and what they do.  (But I couldn't tell you
what the hell that is - way above my understanding.)  Either way, they
are successful and he keeps about 40 folks employed.  That is a good
thing.  Good friend and sponsor Chris Parker with the introduction.  By
the way, Eric and his wife, Kathryn have been married for 14 years.
Thanks and welcome to the club, Eric.

first-ever Exchange Club picture books are almost finished, yet there
are still some members who have not sent in their picture.  To be
included in this directory -- and to receive your copy -- please send a
picture of yourself to Paul Niemann so that he receives it by Monday,
June 16.  NO EXCEPTIONS!  This is the final deadline; once they go to
print, it will be too late.  You can preview the web version by going to
the Exchange Club web site www.quincyexchangeclub.org and clicking on
the "Roster" link at the top of the home page.  Check to see if your
information is correct.  Please pass this information to others whose
picture is not on the site.  The expected delivery date of the picture
books is Friday, June 20th.  Thank you.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
"Today is the 64th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy."  Nice touch
by President Jeff to mention this most significant event.  Just my
opinion but perhaps the third most incredible day in the history of
mankind.  (Birth and death of Jesus being one and two.)  Later that
afternoon I had the privilege of visiting with a dear friend who didn't
read about the day in some history book  - he was there.  Mr. Leroy
Clark shared his story with me, again, about how he drove a jeep on to
the beach and then spent the rest of the day dragging bodies from the
water.  Unbelievable.  Leroy reminded me that over 3,000 men died on
that day - 40% of them drowned.  God bless Leroy and all the men who
were a part of that heroic operation.

THIS & THAT:
Jared Haugh with the prayer and Bill Barry with the pledge.  Jared
pulled double duty as the tail twister as well...  Mel Dillman holding
court at the meeting - making everyone laugh...  Good to see most of our
newest members in the crowd - Eric Thomas (obviously), Courtney Hageman,
Steve Labs, and Tim Muehring.  Courtney brought his twin, Cody, as a
guest...  Good to be a Cub fan now, right Max Johnson?  Before you
purchase those World Series tickets, remember it is only June.  The
swoon should start anytime now...  District President-Elect Dennis Koch
is still looking for a District Representative from our club or
Beardstown.  If interested, please see him...  President Jeff announcing
the board has given authorization for our large tent to be used this
summer at the Quincy GEMS games.  Perhaps a sponsorship night at the old
ballpark in the works.  I hear they are selling some great shaved ice at
the park this year...  Smoke on the River just 90 days from last Friday.
Committee chairs assigned last week.  We'll need your help soon...  Dick
Wentura has the winning 50/50 ticket but drew the wrong card (king of
clubs).  Pot should creep over $200 this week.  Kevin Curran collecting
the money, passing out tickets, and keeping track of the cards for an
absent 1st Vice President Art Awerkamp...  That's all for now, 'til next
time, take care!

Friday, June 6:

THIS FRIDAY:
Last week Eric Thomas was inducted as the Newest Man of Action, this
week he'll be our speaker.  Eric owns and operates ETC Computerland and
we'll hear from him, not necessarily about his business, but about the
world of computers and technology.  Should be a good one, you'll not
want to miss.  (More on Eric and his induction in next week's
Exchangite.)

FRIDAY LAST:
Clairice Hetzler of the Children's Advocacy Center showed a video of
just what her organization is all about.  (Special thanks to Dennis
Koch, Courtney Hageman, and newly inducted Eric Thomas in figuring out
the computer to projector hookup.)  Clairice explained how our major
donation of $5,000 a couple of years ago enabled them to start an
endowment fund and she thanked us for it.  We are even listed in their
brochure.  President Jeff Dorsey introducing.  Good stuff.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:
Gil Feld sent a letter of resignation due to his illness.  The board met
prior to the meeting and did NOT accept it.  President Jeff sent Gil a
letter informing of the action.  Here is the meat of that letter:
"It was with much disappointment that I read your letter of resignation
from the Quincy Exchange Club.  I read the letter to the club today.
Many were unaware of your recent fall and battle with Multiple Myeloma.
You could have heard a pin drop when I read it today at our meeting.
What the members didn't know was that I called a special board meeting
to discuss your resignation and it was decided without any question that
the board members deny your request to leave the club.  When I mentioned
that, a thunderous applause took place.  I want you to know that you
have some 122 Exchangites pulling for your recovery and we are not about
to let one of us leave due to an illness.  With that said, we all look
forward to your return in the near future and if you need anything
please let us know."
Good work, President Jeff.  God Bless you, Gil!

FAMILY PICNIC & FLAG DAY CONCERT:
You and your family are invited to join us at the Madison Park Shelter
on Wednesday, June 11th (yes, that's next week already) at 5:30 p.m. for
the third annual Family Picnic & Flag Day Concert.  We'll start things
off with a good old fashioned cook-out.  After supper, we'll hand out
flags at the Quincy Park Band's concert (which starts at 6:30 p.m.) just
a little east of the shelter.  FREE SHAVED ICE!  This is a very
laid-back and relaxed event - you don't need to bring anything for the
meal.  Grab the wife and kids and join us!  (After we hand out flags,
stay for the concert - bring a lawn chair or blanket.)

SMOKE ON THE RIVER:
Okay, so I was a little premature with a meeting date in last week's
Exchangite.  Get over it.  Meetings will start soon enough.  Chairman
Mel Dillman will let us know when.  Goal of 20 barbecuers this year and
we already have six signed up.  Two words, bigger and better!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
President Jeff let us know that "Mexico will not be sending Olympians to
China this summer because anyone who can run, jump, or swim has already
left the country."

THIS & THAT:
My thanks to President Jeff for taking notes.  I was busy with the
Home's annual Memorial Day Program last week...  Prayer by Jim Benz,
pledge by Fred Lauder, and Bruce Broemmel twisting tails with help from
a Sonny Christner.  Not sure about the mention of sagging breasts...
Immediate Past President Dennis Koch's bride, Terri, a guest.  Terri is
a Children's Advocacy Worker...  20 or so members attended the Tom Burke
memorial service prior to the meeting.  John Tripp did an outstanding
job summing up Tom's wonderful life...  Prayers requested for former
member Don Heckenkamp who is recovering from heart surgery.  It was
reported that Don is doing well...  2008 Macker Chairman Steve Green
thanked everyone for assisting with Macker and then received a standing
ovation after President Jeff thanked him.  Steve has a few items to
finish up and then the reigns to be passed to 2009 Chairman Heath
Richmond...  About a dozen folks showed up to 1st Vice President Art
Awerkamp's planning meeting last week.  Good turn out and a lot
accomplished.  Please note the induction ceremony will take place on
6/27.  There will be NO MEETING on 7/4.  (Both dates added to the VIP
Dates.)  On 7/11, then-President Art Awerkamp will be attending the
National Convention so I'll assume then-1st Vice President Kevin Curran
will run the show.  Looking forward to that - maybe Kevin will
demonstrate one of his Sunday afternoon Macker calls.  Funny stuff...
President Jeff reiterated plans for our club to participate in the
Veterans Day Parade in November.  A chance to showcase our members who
are veterans and our large American flag...  Appropriately and
ironically, Steve Green won the 50/50 but drew the wrong card.  Pot will
soon grow past that $200 start...  That's all for now, 'til next time,
take care!

Friday, May 30:

TOM BURKE:
Long-time (former) Exchangite Tom Burke recently died in the St. Louis
area but burial will be in the Quincy.  All available Exchangites are
called to join us for a brief memorial service at Duker and Haugh
Funeral Home Friday at 11:15 a.m. sharp.  John Tripp has agreed to say a
few words.  I can still vision Tom showing us how a Pollack pulls his
socks up.  One of those things that makes the club and our Friday
afternoons legendary.  Our condolences to Tom's family.

THIS FRIDAY:
We'll welcome back our friend Clarice Hetzler from the Children's
Advocacy Center.  The Children's Advocacy Center has had a couple
different names but the mission has never changed - they are the voice
of those children (through no fault of their own) who end up in the
court system.  Learn more about the significant part this agency plays
in our community on Friday.

FRIDAY, SATURDAY, & SUNDAY LAST:
Brutal weather conditions throughout the weekend couldn't stop another
great weekend of basketball.  Our thanks to Chairman Steve Green for his
leadership during the 18th annual such event.  Great job, Steve.  We
kicked the weekend off on Friday with a visit by Scott McNeal and his
staff.  I love many things about Macker but I have to say my favorite
part of the weekend is listening to Head Buster Kevin Curran make phone
calls on Sunday afternoon to the bums who signed up as Gus Busters, got
their goodies, and then disappeared.  Perhaps Kevin could demonstrate
one of his calls some Friday for us.  Priceless!

NEWEST MAN OF ACTION:
Welcome Hadley Foster to the Exchange Club of Quincy.  Hadley is the
men's volleyball coach at QU and the women's volleyball coach at JWCC.
He and his wife, Kris, will celebrate their 10th anniversary later this
summer.  Hadley's sponsor was Rich Zeidler.  Induction by Mel Dillman
and Steve Peters.

VIP DATES:
5/29 - 2008-09 Planning Meeting (7:00 @ Dennis Koch's office)
6/1 - Roger & Nancy Player celebrate their 34th anniversary
6/2 - Heath & Kathy Richmond celebrate their 18th anniversary
6/3 - Brent & Julie Fischer celebrate their 8th anniversary
6/8 - Smoke on the River Planning Meeting
6/9 - June Board Meeting
6/11 - Family Picnic & Flag Day Concert @ Madison Park
6/20-22 - District Convention in Bolingbrook
7/9-12 - National Convention in St. Louis
7/14 - July Board Meeting
9/6 - Smoke on the River

SMOKE ON THE RIVER:
This event is still a few months away but we received some great news -
our event is now sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society.
Chairman Mel Dillman's goal is 20 teams this year and being sanctioned
will certainly help in that effort.  First planning is June 8th.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
"Does that include those in the Philippines?"  President Jeff Dorsey's
line after Steve Peters offered to show pictures of his
children/grandchildren to the club.

THIS & THAT:
In addition to condolences to the Burke family, we send them to the Reed
family.  Doug's wife, Janie, lost her father on the 16th.  Prayers also
requested for the Reeds as Doug's mother recently underwent heart
surgery...  Speaking of prayers, yours needed for Gil Feld.  Gild is
back in the hospital.  Tough go for the guy but if anything, he has
proven that he is a fighter.  Hang in there, Gil...  President Jeff with
the prayer and Dick Wentura leading the pledge for a disappearing Dennis
Koch...  Congratulations to Gerry Ebbing, Wayne Howe, Gary Peters, and
Scott Westhaus who did us proud in the Cornerstone's Golf Outing...  Our
new waitress is Theresa.  Old timers may remember her from our days at
the Holiday Inn - she served us there as well.  (Not to say that she is
old.)  Please introduce and welcome her...  Guests included Bob Gough,
David Adam, Dave Christner (son of Sonny), Aubrey, Max, and Clay
Venvertloh (children of Chuck)...  Good to see Dr. Lenny Biallas amongst
us...  Roger Schaefer had the winning 50/50 ticket but picked the wrong
card (four of spades).  Pot should be going over $200 soon...

Friday, May 23:

THIS FRIDAY & THIS WEEKEND IS GUS MACKER:
Please join us Friday for what is usually a fairly ruckus meeting.
We'll celebrate the start of another Gus Macker weekend.  Scott McNeal
should be with us and will introduce his event staff.
If  you haven't already signed up for a job, good time to do so.  Macker
will officially start following the meeting - registration begins in the
park that afternoon.  Please see Chairman Steve Green, Art Awerkamp, or
Kevin Curran if you need a "volunteer opportunity".  As Art mentioned
last week, even a 3-4 hour shift helps.  See you Friday.

FRIDAY LAST:
Okay, so it is a DAM and not a DAMN.  Damn it!  I knew that.  Not sure
why I didn't catch it before hitting the damn send button last week.
Thank you for bringing to the club's attention, Cullan Duke.  Damn you!
(Let's be honest, half the guys probably still don't know the dam/damn
difference.)  Anyway, we had the privilege of having Mr. Larry Reever be
our guest speaker
